UA SBRP Walt Klimecki Presents at U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development Workshop

Dr. Walt Klimecki was selected to present his research team’s project titled “Developmental Modulation of Genetic Associations in Arsenic Metabolism” as part of a US EPA sponsored workshop focusing on arsenic research as it relates to human health risk assessment at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia on May 31 – June 2, 2006.

Organized by the U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development, National Health and Environmental Effects Laboratory, the workshop included presentations and discussions on cancer, cardiovascular, and diabetes risks associated with arsenic exposures and the metabolism, mode of action, and modeling of arsenic toxicology.

During the workshop, participants:

  • Reviewed current research on arsenic
  • Identified important data gaps
  • Examined the relationship between data gaps and emerging issues in the risks assessments of arsenic as a toxicant and carcinogen
  • Made recommendations to US EPA for additional research

Dr. Klimecki’s presentation will be appearing in a special issue of Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, highlighting this workshop on Arsenic Research and Risk Assessment.
